Alec kept his face blank, devoid of anything that might tell Magnus what he was thinking, what he was feeling. He knew he'd surprised Magnus with the question and, if he was honest, he'd surprised himself. It was a probing question, a dangerous one, a question that could leave him open and vulnerable.

"Luke moved on from someone he loved," he said, lowering his voice and staring down at the liquid remnants sloshing around the bottom of his mug. "If he does it, why wouldn't you?"

There was curiosity there, no heat or accusation. He was asking for a personal reason though and he made sure to guard against any potential retort of Magnus's.
