While John may not have introduced himself yet, he knows a bit about Agent Reid. Finch had made sure to give him enough information about everyone he works with and for the most part it's been the generic, Darrow-based information that hadn't been all that interesting to either of them. Here and there are officers who aren't from Darrow, people who have come from somewhere else and while John knows a few of them personally, it's Finch who's responsible for what he knows of the others. What he knows about Agent Reid.
Technically John isn't on this case. He has other assignments through the police department, mostly homicide, but he and Finch have been keeping an eye on this one for awhile now. There's only so much the police can do through legal channels and neither he or Finch have any problem going over their heads and making use of less legal methods if it means they can stop this man from killing anyone else, but even with all of Finch's brilliance, they're at a loss. So he listens around the precinct, makes sure to overhear what he can, and when he catches sight of Agent Reid heading toward the break room, John decides it's time to follow.
The man has a family. A husband and a small boy. It isn't his place and he knows he's following the same line of thought that had led to Jessica's death, but Reese can't help but think if he can keep Reid from having to get too deeply involved in this, he can keep his family from having to potentially lose him. This is what they're supposed to do, after all, and he may not be getting numbers any longer, but Reese can see a dangerous situation when it's presented.
"Long night?" he asks once he's inside the break room and catches sight of Reid pouring himself a cup of coffee. John heads for the fridge himself, opening the door and fishing out the half a sandwich he'd left there the day before.
